It is important to know how tires are assembled because each tire is different.  Depending on the style and way the tire was assembled will directly effect how they perform in certain weather conditions and temperatures.

Tread - This is the part of the tire which comes in contact with the surface of the road. This part of the tire usually consists of very thick rubber to provide traction that does not wear away too quickly.  Tread pattern is determined by the shapes of the grooves, voids, and lugs.  These grooves are designed to channel water away from the tire to they can stay tractioned on the road surface. 

Treadwear - Treadware is simply how long the tread should last on a tire before going bald.  Most manufacturers overstate the treadware of their tires to give the impression of quality.  Rating systems are good, but not always accurate as they are more of a marketing technique.

Sidewall - You guessed it, the sidewall is the side of the tires.  These sidewalls are reinforced with rubber and fabric plies that give the tire strength and flexibility.  If the sidewall gets damaged there is no way to repair the tire and it must be replaced.

Goodyear Assurance TripleTred - More people recommend this tire than any other all season tire. It performs very well in tests on every road surface except ice, which other brands of tires seem to do better with. TheTripleTred is a longer wearing tire than either the Continental or Yokohama according to experts and consumers who own and use the tires. This tire carries an 80,000 mile treadware warranty.

 Yokohama Avid TRZ - Tests show that these tires perform almost as well as more expensive all-season tires because they have great traction on all road surfaces except ice.  It comes with an 80,000 mile treadwear warranty but many people complain that it does not last that long and wears out much faster.  Other people have found this tire to be a bit noisy.

Continental ContiExtremeContact- This tire has the highest owner written reviews of the three tires. This is a great high performance tire for people who are on a budget. No other all-season tire gets better traction on winter roads. This tire, however; is not the best performer on wet or dry roads as far as gas mileage and rolling resistance. This is a must have tire for anyone that lives in a snowy area that drives alot in the snow.
